- 1 box chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
- 1 1/2 cups hot water or coffee
- Vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
- Cooking spray
Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Sprinkle the dry chocolate cake mix evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Scatter the chocolate chips evenly over the cake mix layer.
Combine the melted butter and hot water (or coffee) and pour evenly over the top. DO NOT STIR!
Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top appears set but the center is still slightly jiggly.
Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
For a richer flavor, use hot coffee instead of water - the coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without adding coffee taste.
This cake is meant to be gooey in the center - do not overbake!
For variations, try adding a layer of cherry pie filling before the cake mix for a Black Forest version.
Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 20-30 seconds before serving.
For busy families, all ingredients can be kept in the pantry for an anytime emergency dessert option.
